Band of Brothers (TV miniseries)

The Band of Brothers miniseries details, if at times exaggerated or condensed, the real-life exploits of Easy Company during World War II over the course of ten episodes, starting with their jump training at the Currahee training site in Toccoa, Georgia and ending with the capitulation of Germany. The experiences of Major Richard Winters (1918–2011) are a primary focus, as he attempts to keep his men together and safe. While the series stars a large ensemble cast, episodes generally feature one character prominently, following their particular actions during certain events (for example, the Siege of Bastogne and Operation Market Garden).
As the series is based on real-life events, the fate of the characters is the same as their real world counterparts. Numerous characters either die or sustain injuries, some of which lead to them being sent home or leaving the hospital to rejoin their comrades at the battlefront. The experiences and the moral, mental, and physical hurdles the soldiers must overcome are central to the story.

Awards

The series was nominated for nineteen Emmy Awards, and won six, including "Outstanding miniseries," "Outstanding Casting for a miniseries, Movie, or a Special," and "Outstanding Directing for a miniseries, Movie, or a Dramatic Special." It also won a Golden Globe for "Best miniseries, or Motion Picture Made for Television," an American Film Institute award, and was selected for a Peabody Award for "...relying on both history and memory to create a new tribute to those who fought to preserve liberty." It also won a 2003 Writers Guild Award (Television, Adapted Long Form) for episode six ("Bastogne").

"The Killing" will return Sunday April 1

Or at least offer you more to fume about: AMC's "The Killing" will return Sunday, April 1, with a two-hour season premiere, one of last year's most divisive cliffhangers is about to get a resolution. The announcement was one of several from the network Saturday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour.

"Breaking Bad" will return for its fifth season in the third quarter of this year, and that the third season of "The Walking Dead" will be 16 episodes, rather than the 13 episodes for the current, second season, according to AMC. "The Killing" return date will seem appropriate to viewers who felt fooled by the first season's finale. It seemed to solve the season-long mystery of who killed Rosie Larsen, then suddenly threw viewers a final twist that made us question everything we had seen before.

It won't answer the big one: AMC also said Saturday that Larsen's killer won't be revealed until the second season finale, while the premiere will address some lingering questions. "The Killing" Season 2 premiere will air at 8 p.m., with future episodes airing at 9 p.m.

It will be the first two-hour premiere for the show, the network also confirmed that "Mad Men" will return Sunday, March 25, at 9 p.m. -- with another two-hour premiere.

During an interview with the "Doug Loves Movies" podcast, Star Jon Hamm previously announced the date . The show will return to its normal 10 p.m. timeslot after the season premiere. The network also confirmed the Feb. 12 debut date for Kevin Smith's new unscripted series "Comic Book Men." After "The Walking Dead" returns at 9 for the second half of its second season, it will premiere at 10 p.m.

The Real Housewives of Atlanta on Sunday (Nov. 6)

It really is remarkable how the various "Real Housewives" franchises have each managed to mature into very different portraits of mostly silly, fame-seeking women. "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" is no exception and on Sunday (Nov. 6) the Bravo show returns for its fourth season.

Sheree Whitfield and Phaedra Parks join Kandi Burruss for a little sex toy research. Kandi, it seems, is thinking about expanding her product line to include adult toys. And, as you'll see on Sunday, she's not the only one with the entrepreneurial spirit.

You'll thank us later when you realize we could have showed you a preview clip featuring a pregnant Kim Zolciak talking, at length, about her boyfriend's butt and eating ziti covered with Jalapeno peppers. Or a montage of Nene Leakes making references to her appearance on "Celebrity Apprentice."

Will you be watching on Sunday?

The "Real Housewives of Atlanta" are back for Season 4

Check out our exclusive First Look at the upcoming issue of JET magazine where the ladies give how they really feel about their castmates inside..

JET asked the ladies to give their takes on all their other castmates. We already know after this morning that Sheree and NeNe are no longer cool. So Sheree said about NeNe, "I wouldn't trust her as far as I can throw her."

Kandi applauded NeNe saying, "She's a hustler....She's about getting paper. She's always got something in the works." But kept it real about Kim saying, "She's the type of person who knows how to play dumb when she wants to but really knows what's going on..."

Kim stayed mum about her frenemy NeNe saying, "It is what it is..." and revealed that she finally stopped smoking once she got pregnant again.

Phaedra said about Kandi, "She's a brilliant businesswoman. She reminds me a lot of myself, and I just love her." Of course she does Phaedra....

Cynthia said about Kim, "We definitely had some tiffs, but only about trivial things. But on the show it ends up looking like big things."

NeNe revealed she has a wine coming out and she's now a restauranteur--after opening her Famiglia franchise. And she had some ish to say about her castmates. About Kandi she said, "She's real, she's down to earth. But Kandi is not easy to get to know. I actually find her kind of mean."

About Sheree she says, "Sheree is very mean spirited. I think Sheree thinks she's everything. She's got a bad attitude."

And about Phaedra, NeNe commented, "I almost feel like she was that girl at home looking at the tv going, 'Let me on that show!' I call her Fake-dra."

The issue with the full cover story hits stands Monday, November 7th. Bring on the drama....

Who knew the RHOA had such depressing background stories?

Who knew the RHOA had such depressing background stories? I was looking forward to mocking their old faces and hairstyles, and I still will, but there’s a lot of sad stuff to muddle thrugh too. Somehow I’ll find the strength to skewer them. My life is so hard.

real housewives of atlanta nene as a kid 1030
Not as hard as looking that this picture though.

Nene’s mom had her at a young age and wasn’t financially stable so Nene had to live with her aunt. Nene held a grudge against her mother but used it to fuel her dreams of one day making a career out of taking her anger out on others. She was a cheerleader, basketball player and member of 4-H in school. That’s an interesting combo. In my high school, the basketball players wouldn’t be caught dead cheerleading for football season and the basketball players would have flipped the 4-H tractor so that’s great that she was able to pul that off.  Nene went off to college in Atlanta and met a guy at a club. She discovered that he was abusive when they were at a party on campus and he pulled off her fake ponytail. He cried, she cried and she knew it was love.

real housewives of atlanta nene in love 1030
Bam! My ponytail is gone!

A few months into their relationship, Nene ended up pregnant and he claimed that it was not his. Nene dropped out and went home. Her mom was prepared to reunite with Nene at this point but before she could get there, she passed away. After that tragedy, Nene ended up getting back together with her son’s father. They stayed together for five years until one night he took her from her friend’s house at gunpoint in a jealous rage. That’s just rude! He was arrested that night though and she finally ended things with him. Fortunately, this led to the eventual founding of her charity, Twisted Hearts, which served as endless fodder for those who thought it sounded like an 80’s band or a Valentine candy from Spencer’s.

Nene ended up stripping to support herself and she admits that she enjoyed it, treated the men like ATMs and made so much money that she couldn’t stop. Why do parents always make stripping out to be a bad thing? She ended up meeting Greg “through a mutual friend” at a “martini bar” and he pursued her until she gave in out of boredom. In other words, she met him though another stripper at the club and found a sucker. Professionally, Nene was in traveling fashion shows and she was skinny! I don’t think she’s fat now but I was truly shocked. Nene then got a part in “Fighting Temptations” in which she played a stripper. She was also in a few TV shows until she landed RHOA.

real housewives of atlanta kim z family 1030
I get the feeling that this marriage wasn’t legal in most states.

As a child, Kim was a Navy brat who developed her love for seamen at an early age. She was a good kid but when she got to high school, she discovered the joys of chain smoking and opening her legs to married men. Kim was kicked out of Catholic school for stealing an ice cream sandwich but it didn’t matter because she knew that she would be somebody. After all, she took ballet and jazz as a kid and got cake & flowers after her recitals. According to her, it was like having a wedding every year. FYI Kim, funerals have cake and flowers so let’s not get carried away here and 87 million other girls around the world, myself included, had the same dance experience. It doesn’t mean that you’re somebody. It means that your parents are hoping you won’t be a cow and it guarantees that for at least two hours a week you’ll be doing splits for a valid reason.

Metalocalypse Overview

Metalocalypse is an American animated television series, created by Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha, which premiered on August 6, 2006 on Adult Swim. The television program centers around the larger than life death metal band Dethklok and often portrays dark and macabre content, including such subjects as violence, death, and the drawbacks of fame, with extremely hyperbolic black humor and often gets a TV-MA V rating. The show can be seen as both a parody and celebration of heavy metal culture.

The music is written by guitarist/creator Brendon Small, is credited to the band, and is featured in most of the episodes. The animation is often carefully synced to the music, with the chord positions and fingering of the guitar parts shown in some detail.

In the series, Dethklok is a death metal band which enjoys a popularity level unheard of in reality, ranking as the seventh largest economy on Earth by the end of the second season. The fictional band members are Nathan Explosion, Skwisgaar Skwigelf, Pickles The Drummer, William Murderface, and Toki Wartooth. Their manager is Charles Foster Offdensen.

If Dethklok endorses a product or service, competitors are quickly driven out of business. Organizations worldwide, ranging from governments to businesses, go out of their way to avoid hindering Dethklok, to the point that the band is allowed to maintain its own police force and can get away with any crime imaginable with virtually no repercussions, although the band is often too ignorant to even notice that they are committing illegal acts.

The members of Dethklok tend to cause disaster wherever they travel, and anything remotely associated with them likewise attracts chaos. Dethklok concerts are so notoriously dangerous that those attending are required to sign "pain waivers" at the entrance, releasing the band from legal liability in the very likely case attendees are killed or maimed. The band is shown to have a callous disregard for their fans' safety, as shown in the first episode where they pour scalding hot coffee over concertgoers.

The band's popularity is such that impressionable fans will do anything for them, even if that means death, which is usually the case. In the episode "Dethgov", fans of Dethklok murder the governor of Florida after he refuses to establish a holiday for lead singer Nathan Explosion (to be named "Nathan Explosion Day"), whom they then proceed to elect governor in a landslide write-in victory.

The band's unnatural popularity and trail of destruction has attracted the attention of an Illuminati-style group, known as The Tribunal, dedicated to monitoring Dethklok's activity and plans. Typically, episodes involve the Tribunal attempting to maintain and perpetuate public ignorance and rampant consumerism whenever Dethklok's antics inadvertently threaten to upset the status quo. The Tribunal, led by a mysterious character named "Mr. Selatcia", works off the premise that Dethklok's unusual powers are the result of an ancient Sumerian prophecy about an "Apocalypse of Metal". General Crozier, the military leader in the anti-Dethklok group, appears to desire either the death of the band's members or the dismantlement of the band itself, but Mr. Selatcia consistently overrules him to prevent this from happening. Most episodes show the Tribunal attempting to covertly thwart the band by calling in various "specialists", such as "military pharmaceutical psychotropic drug manufacturers", "celebrity depression experts", or various legally compromised characters who attempt to infiltrate the group.

21 Jump Street Drama Television Series

21 Jump Street is an American police procedural crime drama television series that aired on the Fox Network from April 12, 1987, to April 27, 1991, with a total of 103 episodes. The series focused on a squad of youthful-looking undercover police officers investigating crimes in high schools, colleges, and other teenage venues.

The series focused on a group of police officers headquartered at the titular address. These officers were all young in age and had especially youthful appearances which allowed them to pass for teenagers. Their assignments generally consisted of undercover work in high schools or, less commonly, colleges, where they generally investigated drug trafficking and abuse. The show's plots covered typical issues of its time, including alcoholism, hate crimes, drug abuse, homophobia, AIDS, child abuse, and sexual promiscuity. Similarly, each problem was often solved by the end of the hour long show, giving an implicit moral about the impact of a particular activity. When the show originally aired, some episodes were followed immediately by public service announcements featuring cast members.

The show starred prominent actors and actresses at the time, including:
  • Johnny Depp as Officer Tom Hanson (1987–1990)
  • Holly Robinson as Sergeant Judith "Judy" Hoffs (1987–1991)
  • Peter DeLuise as Officer Douglas "Doug" Penhall (1987–1990)
  • Dustin Nguyen as Sergeant Harry Truman Ioki/Vinh Van Tran (H.T. Ioki) (1987–1990)
  • Steven Williams as Captain Adam Fuller (1987–1991)
  • Sal Jenco as Sal "Blowfish" Banducci (1987-1990)
  • Frederic Forrest as Captain Richard Jenko (1987)
  • Richard Grieco as Detective Dennis Booker (1988-91)
  • Michael DeLuise as Officer Joseph "Joey" Penhall (1990–1991)
  • Michael Bendetti as Officer Anthony "Mac" McCann (1990–1991)
Jeff Yagher was originally cast as Officer Tom Hanson in the pilot. He was replaced after the original pilot episode was filmed, and his scenes were reshot with Johnny Depp. Midway through the first season, Frederic Forrest was replaced by Steven Williams. On the show, Forrest's character Richard Jenko is killed by a drunk driver.

Jump Street was set in the "Evergreen State", the nickname of Washington State. However, Washington state was never officially identified as the setting location on the show. But the show's filming location Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada is given away in the series' opening. A shot of a city bus with destination "Hastings" is shown briefly, as well as a SkyTrain with a British Columbia Transit (BC Transit) logo barely visible on the side and every car driven in the series including the ones driven by the characters have British Columbia plates. This was featured in the new opening of Season 3. New Westminster Secondary School was one of the main locations of the series. The license plates on the cars are clearly Canadian as well.

Das Boot (TV MINI SERIES)

The story is told from the viewpoint of Lt. Werner (Herbert Grönemeyer), who has been assigned as a war correspondent on the German submarine U-96 in October 1941. He meets its captain (Jürgen Prochnow), chief engineer (Klaus Wennemann), and the crew in a French nightclub. Thomsen (Otto Sander), another captain, gives a crude drunken speech to celebrate his Ritterkreuz award, in which he openly mocks Winston Churchill and implicitly Adolf Hitler.
The next morning, they sail out of the harbour to cheering crowds and a playing band. Werner is given a tour of the boat. As time passes, he observes ideological differences between the new crew members and the hardened veterans, particularly the captain, who is embittered and cynical about the war. The new men, including Werner, are often mocked by the rest of the crew, who share a tight bond. After days of boredom, the crew is excited by another U-boat's spotting of an enemy convoy. They soon locate a British destroyer, but are bombarded with depth charges. They narrowly escape with only light damage.
The next three weeks are spent enduring a relentless storm. Morale drops after what seems like an endless series of misfortunes, but the crew is cheered temporarily by a chance encounter with Thomsen's boat. Shortly after the storm ends, the boat encounters a British convoy and quickly launches four torpedoes, sinking two ships. However, they are spotted by a destroyer and have to dive below the submarine's rated limit. During the depth-charge attack, the chief mechanic, Johann, panics and has to be restrained. The boat sustains heavy damage, but is eventually able to safely surface in darkness. An enemy tanker remains afloat and on fire, so they torpedo the ship, only to realize that there are still sailors aboard; they watch in horror as the sailors, some on fire, leap overboard and swim towards them. Following orders not to take prisoners, the captain gives the command to back the ship away.
The worn-out U-boat crew looks forward to returning home to La Rochelle in time for Christmas, but the ship is ordered to La Spezia, Italy, which means passing through the Strait of Gibraltar — an area heavily defended by the Royal Navy. The U-boat makes a secret night rendezvous at the harbour of Vigo, in neutral Spain, with the SS Weser, an interned German merchant ship that clandestinely provides U-boats with fuel, torpedoes, and other supplies. The filthy officers seem out of place on the opulent luxury liner, but are warmly greeted by enthusiastic Nazi officers eager to hear their exploits. The captain learns from an envoy of the German consulate that his request for Werner and the chief engineer to be sent back to Germany has been denied.
The crew finishes resupplying and departs for Italy. As they carefully approach Gibraltar and are just about to dive, they are suddenly attacked by a British fighter plane, wounding the navigator. The captain orders the boat directly south towards the African coast at full speed. British ships begin closing in and she is forced to dive. When attempting to level off, the boat does not respond and continues to sink until, just before being crushed by the pressure, it lands on a sea shelf. The crew work desperately to make numerous repairs before running out of oxygen. After over 16 hours, they are able to surface by blowing out their ballast of water, and limp home under the cover of darkness.
The crew is pale and weary upon returning to La Rochelle on Christmas Eve. Shortly after the wounded navigator is taken ashore to a waiting ambulance, Allied planes bomb and strafe the facilities, wounding or killing most of the men. After the raid, Werner leaves the U-boat bunker in which he had taken shelter and finds the captain, with multiple bullet wounds and bleeding from the mouth, watching the U-boat sink at the dock. The captain dies after the boat disappears under the water.
